Gifts for a Coworker You Don't Know Well

A practical way to choose a gift for the colleague you say good morning to and know nothing else about.

Every workplace has a version of this gift: the colleague you have sat near for two years, said a few hundred good mornings to, and know almost nothing about. Then a birthday or a leaving card goes around, and you have two days to produce something that says we are on friendly terms without saying anything you cannot back up.

Start with an honest inventory

Before you look at anything, write down what you actually know, not what you assume. It is usually one of these:

  • Their job, and therefore roughly where they spend the day
  • One or two things mentioned in passing: a dog, a commute, a child, a team they follow
  • Whether they drink coffee or tea, which offices advertise constantly
  • Whether they are remote, hybrid or in every day

That is normally enough. The mistake is reaching past it into invented detail — the comedic gift for the person who once made a joke, the fitness gadget for someone who mentioned a gym once.

Our picks

1. A Monitor Riser

Popular choices: HUANUO 3-Height Monitor Riser

A simple riser or small shelf that lifts a monitor to eye level.

Why it matters: It requires no knowledge of taste, and almost nobody buys one. It is the safest object on this list for the office-based colleague.

What to look for: Something with a built-in drawer or cable slot gets used more than a plain slab.

2. A Cable Organizer

Popular choices: JOTO Cable Management Sleeve

See options on Amazon →

Clips, a tidy tray or a weighted cable drop for the desk.

Why it matters: Everyone's desk has a tangle they have stopped noticing. Fixing it is a small, permanent improvement that costs very little.

3. A Proper Mouse Mat

Popular choices: K KNODEL Leather Desk Mat (31.5" x 15.7")

See options on Amazon →

A large fabric or leather mat that fits under both keyboard and mouse.

Why it matters: An understated upgrade to something they touch all day, and hard to get wrong.

4. A Small Desk Fan

Popular choices: JISULIFE Rechargeable Desk Fan

See options on Amazon →

Only if they are in the office regularly.

Why it matters: Offices are either too warm or too cold and nobody controls it. A small fan is a genuinely useful possession rather than a decorative one.

5. Their Coffee, One Grade Better

Popular choices: Peet's Major Dickason's Blend (18 oz)

See options on Amazon →

A bag of good coffee or a tin of decent tea, in the type you know they already drink.

Why it matters: It is the one category where a small, specific observation beats a guess. If you do not know their preference, skip it.

What to look for: Check for dietary restrictions before you commit. This is the most common way a friendly gift becomes an awkward one.

What to avoid

  • Anything referencing their job. A mug about project management, given at the office, is a gift about the office.
  • Alcohol. It is the default office gift and the wrong choice for anyone who does not drink, is pregnant, is in recovery, or follows a religion that prohibits it. You will probably not know which applies, and asking is one more conversation than this gift deserves.
  • Anything personalized. Personalization converts a guess into something permanent, with no return.
  • Anything that needs a size or a measurement.

The card matters more than the gift

If the budget is small and the relationship is thin, a specific line on the card — the thing they said in a meeting, the project you worked on together — often lands harder than the object. Specificity reads as attention, and attention is the point.

If you have nothing specific to say, buy a better single gift instead, because the object then has to carry the whole message.

When a contribution is the better answer

For a leaving gift, money toward something they would choose themselves is usually more welcome than a small object, and a larger contribution to a communal present is rarely the wrong call.

If you have more warning than this

Our remote worker guide covers home-office gifts in depth, and the first-time manager guide is the place to look if the colleague is being promoted rather than leaving.

The practical version

Buy from the desk category, check the food restrictions, and write something specific on the card. That combination is the one that goes wrong least often.
